Stephen Blume is a Master ASE Technician who started his automotive career right here in Petaluma in 1998. He took over Accu-Line Brake & Wheel in 2014, continuing a legacy that started in 1994 under founder David Atteberry.

Steve runs his shop on a simple principle -- fix it right, price it fair, and never sell someone something they don't need. His customers come back year after year because they trust him. He's the kind of mechanic who'll save you hundreds by finding a simpler fix, and tell you when something can wait instead of pushing unnecessary work. As a NAPA Auto Care Center, every repair is backed by a nationwide warranty.

He doesn't do it alone. Accu-Line runs on a team, and the standard is the same whoever's hands are on your car -- same diagnosis, same straight answer, same warranty behind it.

Every year Accu-Line throws its own anniversary shindig, right here in the shop -- live music, the bay doors thrown open, kids dancing between the lifts. It doubles as a fundraiser for PHASE Boosters, and it's the same reason customers keep coming back for thirty years: this isn't just a repair shop, it's family.

Three Decades in Petaluma

Steve isn't just a supporter of Petaluma High's auto shop program, which traces back to 1941 -- he's a graduate of it. He took four years of automotive and metal shop as a student and was Auto Club President his senior year, before going on to the automotive program at Santa Rosa Junior College and earning his ASE Master certification.

In 2017, when the program's teacher of 40 years moved on and the school struggled to find a replacement, Steve was part of the group that fought to keep it alive. Two years later he helped convince a fellow PHS grad, Keith Benson -- then a working Ferrari mechanic -- to leave that career and take it over, backed by the promise of real funding. In 2020 that promise became PHASE Boosters, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Steve and Tara helped found. Tara still runs its marketing and events as Media Chair, including Cars & Critters, the annual car show where students build and fabricate their own trophies. Since then the program has raised roughly $700,000 in donations and grown into a shop where, in Benson's words, students learn that “we can engineer our way out” of anything -- working on Maseratis, NASCAR engines, and chassis dynos, building electric vehicles, and machining parts for NASA. Students have built a top fuel dragster and a NASCAR race car of their own.

Accu-Line also supports Cruisin' the Boulevard and Petaluma's Salute to American Graffiti, the annual downtown event celebrating classic cars and hot rods. It's the same spirit that runs through everything else here -- cars, and the people who love them, aren't just business to Steve, they're his community.
